Attention all visitors to Grand Cayman who love barbecue!   Henry’s Big Tree BBQ in Cayman’s East End, is the place you need to try.

Big Tree BBQ is a father and son operation.  Two years ago Henry Harris went from retirement to making locals and visitors happy with his home cooking. Henry and his son, Arvid, get up early every morning to start the smoker and grill.  Fried conch and plantains, “falling off the bone” baby-back ribs, chicken, jicama coleslaw, corn on the cob, red beans and rice, and even turtle, are on the menu.

Feed the Frigate Birds at Tukka

One of the most fun and welcoming restaurants on Grand Cayman is Tukka’s located in the east end of the island.  Not only is the food great – a “taste of Australia with a Caribbean twist,” but every afternoon at 5pm they feed the Frigate Birds which is a blast to watch.

Frigates are long-winged, fork-tailed seabirds found across all tropical oceans.  What’s so interesting about Frigates is that, unlike other seabirds, their feathers are not waterproof.  This lack of waterproofing renders them unable to land on water.  They soar on the rising warm air during the day and glide along on trade winds.  These constantly changing winds allow Frigates to easily stay aloft for months at a time.

Frigate birds spend most of the day in flight hunting for food.   Their main prey are fish and squid that they catch when chased to the water surface by large predators such as tuna.   Frigates also steal the food from other seabirds.  For this, they are known as kleptoparasites.

It didn’t take long for Cayman’s frigates to learn about the free meals at Tukka.  Every evening around 5pm or 5:30pm, Tukka’s kitchen assistants bring down a plate of seafood scraps to the shore and the frigates begin to gather.  It’s so much fun to watch them hoover in the air, waiting for their turn to swoop down and take a piece of squid or fish and then shoot back up into the air.

No matter where you’re staying,  bring the kids and your camera to Tukka any day around 5pm and feed the Frigates.  It’s great fun and a great eco-friendly experience!  Tukka’s food is good too!

Breakfast at Over The Edge

Over The Edge  is a casual little restaurant on North Side Road in Old Man Bay, Grand Cayman.  They’re open every day and serve breakfast every morning between 8-11am.  The outdoor deck at The Edge overlooks the Caribbean and offers a relaxing setting.

The menu features all the classics, from French toast and pancakes to hearty bacon and eggs, but for a Caribbean twist try the callaloo omelet, served with toast and potatoes. Callaloo is known as the West Indian spinach – and it’s a winning mix. Another good bet is the ackee and codfish, Jamaica’s national dish. This hearty breakfast combines the fruit of the ackee tree, which looks and tastes like scrambled eggs, with sautéed cod, Scotch bonnet peppers, spices and tomatoes. Both ring in under $8. Pair it with coffee or ramp it up with a Bloody Mary, Caesar or Mimosa, also reasonably priced at $7.  ( +1 345-947-9568)

Silver Thatch Charters took out their first group of guests yesterday and what a fun day it was! Great weather, great company and a great boat!  Australian Captain George, picked up his group of ladies from the Kaibo Dock in Cayman Kai and they set out for Stingray City Sandbar.  Upon discovering that the Sandbar was overrun with Cruise people, George motored on to Starfish Point where the ladies could relax and enjoy themselves and stay as long as they liked.

The ladies had a great time enjoying the sunshine while leisurely sitting in the shallow crystal clear water with a cold beverage surrounded by starfish.   When the ladies were ready, they hopped back on Silver Thatch and George headed for the stingrays.  George knew the crowds would be gone by the time they arrived.

George ended the charter with a cruise through Cayman’s fabulous mangrove forest.  The mangroves are the ecological heart of Grand Cayman.

Calypso Grill at Morgan’s Harbor is one of the best restaurants on the island and Silver Thatch Charters is a fantastic way to get to that part of Grand Cayman.   After dinner, Captain George takes his guests back across the pond to North Side.  Guests can listen to music while watching for shooting stars on the way back to their villa.  It’s truly one of the best ways to experience Grand Cayman.
